Perhaps you’re looking forward to another winter where you crank the heat and enjoy toasty indoor temps, but you notice your neighbor has his ceiling fan running. It’s cold, so why would your neighbor need the fan?
Your neighbor likely called the best electrician in Pittsburgh and had a ceiling fan installed for the express purpose of warming up faster. It sounds counterintuitive, but it’s basic science.
Look for the switch on the side of the motor on your ceiling fan. This switch reverses the direction of the fan.
Typically, it’s in the “summer” position, which means it rotates counter-clockwise and pushes air down. If you have a modern fan that uses a remote, check the remote for a reversing button. Flip that switch, and it will be in the “winter position,” which will pull air up. This is where the science bit comes in.
Since warm air rises, it tends to move toward the ceiling and stay there. That’s why your second floor heats up faster than the first floor. By having the fan circulate the air by the ceiling, you’re spreading out that warm air faster than it would on its own, making the room heat up more quickly.
It's time for another counterintuitive idea — having the fan spin slowly will spread warmth more efficiently. This is because fast-moving fan blades create a chilling effect and don’t do a good job of moving cold air up.
Also, it will use less energy, so it’s good for your power bill, too. Just get into the habit of giving that chain three pulls to bring the fan to the lowest speed.
Remember, the fan only circulates air in that one room, not the whole house. If you’re not in the room to feel its effects, it’s just wasting electricity.
